Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetary
Most of those buried in GROESBEEK CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY were Canadians, many of whom died in the Battle of the Rhineland, when the 2nd and 3rd Canadian Infantry Divisions and the 4th Canadian Armoured Division took part in the drive southwards from Nijmegen to clear the territory between the Maas and the Rhine in February and March 1945. Others buried here died earlier or later in the southern part of the Netherlands and in the Rhineland. The cemetery contains 2,610 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, and nine war graves of other nationalities. The CEMETERY and MEMORIAL were designed by P.D. Hepworth.
Markelo Fallen Airmen Memorial
On Saturday, April 15, 2023, it was commemorated that 80 years ago, three Allied bombers crashed in the outskirts of Markelo. 17 of the 21 crew members were killed, one is missing and three survived the crashes. The 17 victims from Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand found their final resting place at the Field of Honour of the General Cemetery in Markelo.
The impressive commemoration was attended by a number of relatives of the victims who died. Representatives of the Embassies and Air Forces of Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Netherlands were also present, as well as the flag bearers of the Royal British Legion Branch 3623 and the Canadian Legion Branch 005. The formed "Canada Committee Foundation" aims to continue to commemorate the Second World War and to pass on the memories of our liberators to future generations Over the years, Canada and the Netherlands have been inextricably linked. In Markelo in particular, close ties have been created partly through the actions of Canadian veterans such as Frank Graham and Bert Reynolds. Both have made many visits to Markelo and are greatly respected by the locals for their heroic deeds.
Oorlogsemuseum and the Battle of Overloon
War belongs in a museum. That is the motto of the War Museum. The museum shows how the Second World War came about, what its impact was on millions of people, and how the population coped with shortages, restrictions, and oppression. There is attention to daily life, resistance, and persecution. A key focus is the Battle of Overloon, where Allied and German troops fought fiercely in 1944. These battles rank among the heaviest fought on Dutch soil and are illustrated in the museum with original vehicles and artillery. The Battle of Arnhem was lost by the allied forces. They accumulated in the Corridor and sought a way out. But the German troops were now warned and dug in around Venlo. The fighting that broke out around Overloon from September 26 included:
US 7th Armored Division
British 3 Infantry Division
British 11 Armored Division
107. Panzer Brigade
Fallschirmjäger and other German troops
Firstly, the Americans attacked. They were relieved by the British on 7 October. On October 12, hell broke loose with shelling by more than 300 British guns. Overloon town was shot to pieces. Only when it was completely in ruins did the advance of the British, who controlled the situation in Overloon on October 14, begin.
